Native American, Midwestern United States, Eastern Woodland, Archaic Period, ca. 8000 to 1000 BCE. A hand-carved axe head or hand axe of a broad form with a thick butt end, a bifacial blade head, and a smooth groove that encircles most of the head, about three quarters of the width around. The groove was used for attaching the stone to a short handle with fibrous twine or leather straps to use as an axe, and the rounded butt could be used as a hammer. Size: 5.25" L x 3" W (13.3 cm x 7.6 cm)
