Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 200 BCE. A hand-carved stone figure of characteristically abstract form depicting an 'axe god,' so called because scholars believe these figures were formed from discarded or damaged stone axe heads. The slender figure presents with deep, string-cut grooves that delineate the legs, arms, neckline, mouth, and furrowed brow, with dramatically pointed shoulders and jawline, and a rounded brow. Size: 1.75" W x 4.8" H (4.4 cm x 12.2 cm); 5.6" H (14.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Small losses to proper left foot and top periphery along verso as shown. Minor abrasions and nicks to face, body, and legs, with light softening to some string-cut details. Nice root marks throughout. Figure is attached to lucite panel with foam material and cannot be removed without potentially damaging the verso of the figure; figure and lucite panel can be removed from wooden display stand.
