(1912-1977) German-American rocket pioneer who began his career developing the V-1 and V-2 rockets used by the Nazis, and after his arrival in the U.S. was largely responsible for the Redstone and Saturn rockets, and for the success of NASA as a whole. A 5.5 x 4.5 in. off-white album page bearing a pencil sketch of a simple rocket in flight which closely resembles a V-2. von Braun inscribes the drawing, adding the Latin phrase 'Per aspera ad astra" ('Our aspirations take us to the stars') and signs beneath the quote.
