A REPUBLIC OF TEXAS ERA SANTA ANNA CONTENTS LETTER CORRESPONDENCE, GENERALS NICOLAS BRAVO TO FRANCISCO PIZARRO, MATAMOROS, MARCH 9, 1837, ink manuscript on wove paper, addressed to General Francisco Pizarro from General Nicolas Bravo, the letter dictated by Gen. Bravo communicates that Gen. Santa Anna is traveling from the United States back to Mexico where he will explain his defeat and loss of Texas. 10" x 8" Note: Edward Eberstadt & Sons., Specialists in Rare Americana, 888 Madison Ave., New York, N.Y., December 23, 1965. "General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was captured by the Texans at the Battle of San Jacinto. He was later released by the Texans and went to Washington D.C...In this letter one of the important Mexican generals of the time writes about Santa Anna's release and return to Mexico, 'From your letter of 4 February I finds that General Santa Anna has left Washington and embarked at Baltimore in a steamship bound for Norfolk, VA, from whence he will come to Mexico in the U.S. Ship PIONEER. Now from a special letter from Mexico I learn that he arrived in Veracruz on 20 February ad on the 21st at Manga de Clavo.' Manga de Clavo was Santa Anna's famous homestead. Bravo concludes by saying that he is sending Pizarro this important news for fear he has not otherwise learned it."Provenance: Collection of Hubert Hudson, Texas Senator 1957-1963, Brownsville, Texas.
