Description
Hugo Breul (American, 1854-1910). "Rocky Coastline", n.d. Oil on board. Signed lower left. Dimensions: 11" x 14 3/4". Condition: Fair. Minor paint loss upper right corner. Situated along Narragansett Bay, the opportunity to sketch its rocky shores was a great exercise for the local painter. It took some skill to master rock formations and textures of the craggy formations. Breul was a prolific and skilled painter and one of the leading artists in the City of Providence in his generation. His art education was under O. Seitz and Lindenschmidt in Germany, later studying with Boulanger and Lefebvre in Paris, and finally, with W. Merritt Chase in NYC. Breul settled in Providence in 1883 and became one of the early members of the Providence Art Club, occupying a studio in Butler Exchange building. The artist was proficient in a number of subjects, including portraits, figures, nature and animals. He had two decades of critical success & patronage from 1880-1900. At the age of 56, Breul found himself deeply in debt, with dwindling patronage, and sadly committed suicide. His works are in many Rhode Island homes, as well as institutions, including The Providence Art Club, Providence Public Library, Athenaeum, Brown University, Providence City Hall, and the Rhode Island State House.
