Item Details
Description
Edmund Darch Lewis (1835-1910). "Northeaster, Cape Ann Mass", 1901. Watercolor on paper. Signed and dated lower right. Title in artist's handwriting. Dimensions: 20" x 34". Matted & housed under glass in 19th century reproduction gold leaf frame. Framed: 34" x 48". Lewis was the son of very supportive parents. As he advanced his painting career, he enjoyed parental room & board until his financial and artistic independence was achieved by the age of 50. Lewis certainly was a generation before homestead Millennial and Gen-Z children. His family support among siblings was evident as he also would regularly utilize his sisters' summer homes in Maryland and Rhode Island as a base for his painting excursions, including the visit to Cape Ann for painting this seascape in 1901. A commanding water view of a Nor'easter churning the waves off Cape Ann is similar in style and composition to the artist’s Cape May ocean renderings. One of the most prolific and commercially successful American seascape painters of the late nineteenth century, Edmund Darch Lewis rendered crisply realistic images of shorelines, waterways, and rural scenes in the Northeast that received popular acclaim during his era. Lewis exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1854-69) and was elected an associate of the Academy in 1859. He showed at the National Academy of Design in New York (1860), the Boston Athenaeum (1858-69), and the Brooklyn Art Association (1862-70).
