Description
**Originally Listed At $200**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 500 CE; Central America, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 300 to 700 CE. A beautiful pair of Pre-Columbian hand-built pottery effigy vessels. The first is an intriguing example of a highly stylized cargador ("carrier" in Spanish) pottery figure. The woman sits with a skirt over her lap - if turned over, one will see the rounded legs and shapely posterior she rests upon. Her hollow body is the vessel, and two arms extend up and become integral with the rim. Protruding from the front wall are her conical breasts and stylized head with a large nose, impressed eyes, and a tapered chin with a deeply incised mouth. The other vessel is a tripodal terracotta pot presenting a round-bottomed body supported by three lengthy legs and surmounted by zoomorphic creatures with huge, applied eyes, flared nostrils, and open mouths. A tall neck and flared rim elegantly rise from the body. Size (tripod): 5.25" L x 4.5" W (13.3 cm x 11.4 cm) Size: 5.25" L x 4.5" W (13.3 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired from Goldberg Auctions, Los Angeles, California, USA in 1968
