Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya area, ca. 600 to 1100 CE. An impressive pottery jar supported by 3 lizard effigy legs, each positioned with heads facing toward the flared rim, as though their spiked bodies are slithering up the vessel. Six frog or lizard heads additionally protrude from the corseted neck of the jar, while a pair of petite reptilian or avian zoomorphic handles connect the slanted shoulder to the broad rim. Each hollow leg contains a clapper allowing the vessel to double as a rattle. Lizards frequently appear in Costa Rican art, strongly suggesting the supernatural import of these creatures in ancient times. Size: 6" L x 6" W x 6.8" H (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm x 17.3 cm)
Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
