Description
Inscribed with owner's name, "Samuel Blackman / june 1757" (identified as S, Blackman, 1736-1820., served in Co. 14 of Phineas Lyman's Ct. Regiment, at Fort Number 4 - later Charlestown, NH - in June, 1757; subsequently took part in several campaigns, lastly served under Israel Putnam in unsuccessful assault on Havana, 1762) also inscribed by the maker, "Ioseph Coley his [wark] mad / at number 4 june the 11 1757" (served in the same Ct. company as Blackman in June 1757), embellished all around with four sailboats, a building facade (possibly a church or the gate/watchtower of the fort at No. 4) birds and other animals, and an assortment of flowering plants and trees; cow's horn, shaved thin toward the mouth, and wooden butt secured with metal brads and metal post and ring for sling (reset several times), 10 3/8 in. L.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from William Guthman, 1992. Accompanied by copies of relevant research and documentation.
