Description
A rare example by the "JW" carver with location information, inscribed "Micah Hoyt / No. 4 Sep't 12 1761" (identified with Micah Hoyt, 1738-1807, of Newton, NH, who served with the New Hampshire militia at No. 4 (Charlestown, NH) in the French and Indian War, and during the Revolution served in 26th Cont. Infantry and the 2nd NH Infantry, participating in Battle of Bunker Hill, the Siege of Boston and other service until furloughed in 1779) shaved cow horn with wooden butt cap secured with small nails, incised "TT / 1812," reflecting later use, 13 in. L.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from William Guthman, 1998. Together with copies of various documentation.
Condition
Horn with some chipping near the butt edge. Damage to the wooden butt cap from weathering and resetting suspension nails
