Description
Inscribed "IOHN : SPRAGUE / IUNr. / HIS : POWDER : / HORN : IUNE Ye : 1- / 1762 : IN : ye : 39 : O / YEAR : OF : HIS : AGE" (identified with John Sprague Jr., 1723-1778, of New London and Litchfield Co., Ct., who served with the maker, Isaac Lawrence, in Col. Ebenezer Marsh's militia regiment on an expedition to relieve Ft. William Henry in August, 1757, and presumably saw service on the Canadian frontier in 1762) further inscribed "MADE : BY : / ISAAC : LAWRENCE / I : POWDER : WITH : MY : BROTHER : BALL : A : HERO : LIKE : DO : CONQUER : ALL," engraved with a view of a densely built city (identified as Quebec), a battle scene with soldiers formed in lines, a small sailboat, and a cartouche; cow horn, thinned and engrailed toward the spout, with slightly domed wooden butt cap centering a small staple and carved with the initials "I S" and a heart, 12 3/8 in. L.

Condition
The butt has chipping all around, and an old crack extends approx. three inches. A second scene with soldiers is largely rubbed out. An area of old surface loss on the collar
