Item Details
Description
Inscribed, "..NIEL : CHURCH : IN : WEATHERSFIELD : ROCKY HILL / FAB : 10 : 1776" (though several men of this period shared the name, most likely identified as Daniel Church, born before 1750-1825, resident of Danbury area, keeper of a fish pound and horse brander) engraved with a pound net and numerous fish, two schooners (one labelled "THEE : SCHOONER : LIBERTY"), about 20 soldiers in mitre helmets, three cannons (labelled 36, 48 and 4), a very long snake coming up beneath a tree; a church (which Guthman identified with the Old North Church, Boston, but may have been a visual pun on the owner's name), and various animals and plants; cow horn shaved thin, (possibly once dyed green), slightly domed wooden cap on the butt, secured with metal brads, and with a small wire suspension loop at the edge, carved wood stopper, 10 3/8 in. L.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from William Guthman, 1983. Accompanied by copies of relevant research and documentation.
Condition
The horn was shortened - probably more than once - during its active use, cutting off the owner's name twice
