Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. A hand-carved gray stone axe god figure, of characteristically abstract form, standing atop a pair of string-cut legs. Shallow string-cut grooves define the arms and waistline while additional grooves constitute the mouth, eyes, and neckline. The heavy stone presents a smooth surface and natural mottled tones of gray and white, resembling marble or granite. Scholars believe figures like this were created after a utilitarian stone axe head became broken or otherwise unusable Size: 1.5" L x 3.1" W x 9" H (3.8 cm x 7.9 cm x 22.9 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private British Columbia, Canada collection, gifted from aunt in Tucson, Arizona, USA, acquired prior to 1994

Condition
Chipping to head, feet, and shoulders, as well as nicks and abrasions to surface as shown, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, intact with a very nice presentation. Light earthen deposits throughout.
