Description

Abraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed. One partially-printed vellum page, 15.25" x 18.25", Washington, July 1, 1864, appointing "Clayton McMichael . . . Captain in the Ninth Regiment of Infantry." Countersigned by Edwin Stanton as secretary of war. Seal of the War Department at upper left. Overall wrinkling to the edges with the usual folds. McMichael enlisted in the U.S. 9th Infantry as a lieutenant in August 1861. He served as quartermaster before receiving this commission as captain. He received a brevet promotion to major in April 1865 and resigned on September 28, 1865.
