Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Ca 1300 to 1500 CE. The Chimu people (900-1450 CE) of Peru perfected distinctive blackware pottery. employing smoldering flames during the firing and then buffing the surface to produce a dull sheen. Many of the pottery forms derived from the Moche culture, which preceded the Chimu in the Andean region of Peru. This piece is Inca, but showing strong Chimu influence - probably made by a Chimu captive for an Inca lord. Stirrup jar with twin spouts, bridge connecting. Atop sits a seated lord or Cazique, flanked by two frogs. below, a lord stands with spear in one hand, other holding a jaguar paw - background stippled. 7" H by 7" W.
