8vo (the leaf 150 x 100 mm), pretty contemporary brown gilt calf, with blind fillets on covers, golden fleur-de-lys corner tools, and central golden tool on both covers. Gilt spine with raised bands, small gold tools in compartments, manuscript title on paper label (top and bottom of spine some worn). Printer’s woodcut device on title, pp. (16), 574. Complete.

The work consists of a collection of biographies ("gli elogi" = the praises) of famous men written by Giovio, from Alexander the Great to Cosimo de 'Medici, by Suleiman Cortes Tamerlane. The praises were a valuable source for biographical reconstruction of the characters treated.

Paolo Giovio (1483-1552), was an historian and a collectionist, Bishop of Nocera in 1528.
