Description
DESCRIPTION: A Confederate commission for the state of North Carolina appointing Presley [sic - Priestly] H. Mangum of Wake County a First Lieutenant of the Company in Wake Forest District of the 35th Regiment of the 17th Brigade in the 7th Division of the North Carolina Militia dated September 4, 1861 and signed by North Carolina governor Henry Toole Clark. Priestly Hinton Mangum was born circa 1829 in Wake County, North Carolina. After the Civil War, Mangum perfected the Mangum terrace, a system of hillside ridges used to increase cultivatable land, conserve soil moisture, and minimize erosion, and a feature that came to dominate the agricultural landscape of the cotton South. He died in 1907. MEASUREMENTS: 13-3/4" x 8-1/2". CONDITION: Light toning, folds/creases and corner bumping as expected with age.
