Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A standing bichrome figure of the so-called sheepface variety holding a ball in his raised right hand (as if he is about to hurl 'la pelota') and a short club in his left. His expressive visage is comprised of coffee bean shaped eyes, a pronounced protruding nose, pointy horn-like ears, striated face paint or tattoos, and a happy smile. In addition, this gent is elaborately adorned with a twisted headband, openwork ear ornaments, a multistrand painted beaded necklace, a single-shoulder strapped shirt decorated with wavy, striated, and dotted textile and / or beaded motifs, a loin cloth, gloves, and foot coverings. Size: 7.75" W x 8.75" H (19.7 cm x 22.2 cm)
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
