Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A delightful pair of hand-built terracotta female figures, standing on arched feet, and each displaying such characteristic "sheepface" characteristics as a pointed nose, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, pointed ears, and a tall forehead with accompanying headband. The taller figure has a wider stance, huge breasts, rounded shoulders, and a slight portly abdomen. The shorter figure has similar features but with shorter arms, a larger abdomen, and a slightly curved back. Each figure has white-painted embellishments such as trousers and necklaces, and both are wonderful examples of ancient shaft-tomb pottery! Size of largest: 5" H (12.7 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
