North America, Native American, Central Arizona, Hohokam Indians, ca. 1100 to 1300 CE. An enormous, hand-built stone hand axe, carved from a mottled green stone with dark inclusions. It features a three-quarters groove handle, and the butt end is mostly rounded with a flat face along the outermost surface. The head has two smooth faces, each tapering to a point, with a flat midrib along the top side. The underside of the handle is also flat, allowing the axe to sit upright when not in use. Size: 7.25" L (18.4 cm).
Provenance: private Cason collection, Boulder, Colorado, USA

Expected age-commensurate surface wear, with small chips to handle, butt, and blade. Light earthen deposits throughout, otherwise intact and very good. "Arizona Hohokam Axe, grade 10, Cason collection" written on one side in black marker.
