John M. Schofield War Dated Letter Signed Day before Surrender at Appomattox!
1p LS signed by Union Civil War commander John M. Schofield (1831-1906) as “J.M. Schofield” at lower center. Letter written at Army of the Ohio Headquarters in Goldsboro, North Carolina on April 8, 1865. Docketed in lower left corner, and verso. With "Congress" mark embossed at top left. The cream blue-lined sheet is tipped into a larger sheet measuring 7.75" x 9.5." In very good to near fine condition, double hole-punched at top, with expected paper folds and a few tiny abrasions at top.

Major General John M. Scofield commanded the Army of the Ohio, a support army of Sherman's. Schofield's forces participated at the Battle of Franklin in late November 1864, the Battle of Wilmington on February 22, 1865, and the Battle of Wyse Fork in mid-March 1865 before joining Sherman's troops in Goldsboro, North Carolina on March 22, 1865. The Battle of Appomattox Station occurred on April 8, 1865, the day this letter was signed by Schofield, and General Robert E. Lee subsequently surrendered the next day. The Civil War was over.
John M. Schofield was a career soldier and served as the 28th U.S. Secretary of War under the Grant and Johnson administrations. Although he was initially dismissed from West Point, Schofield later redeemed himself with a solid military record. During the Civil War, Schofield first fought Confederate guerillas in Missouri, and then participated in eastern campaigns. Schofield's promotion in 1895 acknowledged his lifetime contribution to the U.S. Army.
Edward D. Townsend (1817-1893) was a member of army support staff stationed in Washington, D.C. during the Civil War.
