Description

Anastasia, Russia/Moscow, 19 th century, tempera on wooden board, size 31 x 27 cm. At the center a depiction of the Easter theme, Christ's decent into Hades. Christ stands on the fallen gates of Hades. He grasps the hand of Adam; Eve bows down at Christ's feet as numerous righteous patriarchs, prophets and holy women step out of the Jaws of Hell, the mouth of a great red monster, walking forth from bondage. They wind upwards to the gates of Heaven (top right) where Rakh, the Righteous Thief awaits Paradise. They are identified by the names in their haloes as Solomon, David, John the Forerunner and so on. On the left an Angel descends and binds Hades. Above this scene, the Western version of the Resurrection, Christ above his empty tomb. In Paradise (upper right) we see Enoch and Elijah, who according tradition did not die nut ascended to heaven while still alive. They are accompanied by the Good Thief. In the top left corner Peter inspects the burial shroud and empty tomb and In the lower right corner we see Christ calling the apostles by Lake Galilee.
