Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, late Republic to early Imperial period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A beautiful mold-formed bowl composed of opaque, cobalt-hued glass with a slight concave base, rounded walls, a shallow basin, and a thick rim with a fire-polished lip. The exterior is decorated with thirty integral projecting ribs which terminate just beneath the rim and provide its signature appearance. This style of glass is known as pillar molded, referring to the production technique, where the shape of the bowl was determined by taking a flat sheet of pliable glass and placing it into a solid mold upside down; this glass was then worked so that it is slipped/sagged over the mold to create the exterior ribs. Both the interior and exterior are covered in fiery layers of rainbow-hued iridescence. Size: 6.2" W x 1.9" H (15.7 cm x 4.8 cm).
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private New York, New York, USA collection
