Description
Autograph letter signed, by Robert Charles Winthrop (1809-1894, Speaker of the House, descendant of John Winthrop.) Boston, April 18th 1839. Addressed to William Stowell. Ink on wove, 4to, 4 pp. Several closed tears along creases, else Good. ******************** Expresses his dislike of political societies, clubs, etc., including "the facility they afforded for secret plots and conspiracies." It seems he was not generally against all societies, inasmuch as he was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society one year prior, in 1838. Interesting content, legible, well-written. Winthrop studied law under Daniel Webster; he also served in several political capacities, U.S. Congressman, and eventually Speaker of the House of Representatives.
