Post War & Contemporary Art | Pure Edge

Post War and Contemporary Art on May 14th presents an exemplary selection of painting, sculpture, and more by major figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. This standout offering is led by Sam Gilliam's 1970 acrylic Sun Woman, Miyoko Ito's 1957 oil Adam and Eve, and Maria Martins's Impossible, an exceedingly rare defining work of the Surrealist movement. Further highlights include sculpture from Annie Morris, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Lynda Benglis, and works from Hannah Wilke, Andreas Gursky, John Currin, Amoako Boafo, Anthony James, Joan Miro, and John Wesley, among others. Post War and Contemporary Art will be preceded by Pure Edge American Geometric Abstraction, Selected Works from the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Buenos Aires. Few movements in postwar American art pursued clarity with such unrelenting conviction as Hard Edge and geometric abstraction. Pure Edge brings together nineteen exceptional works from the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Buenos Aires MACBA, one of South Americas foremost collections of American geometric abstraction. Spanning five decades of practice, the group unites pivotal figures of the Hard Edge, Op, Minimalist, and Light and Space movements, among them Lorser Feitelson, Karl Benjamin, Paul Feeley, Thomas Downing, John McCracken, and Ilya Bolotowsky, whose commitment to flat color, cleanly drawn form, and the dynamics of perception defined the most uncompromising strain of postwar American art. Assembled through MACBAs distinguished engagement with galleries, estates, and institutions across the United States, this rare selection of deaccessioned works offers collectors an exceptional opportunity to acquire historically significant pieces with outstanding institutional provenance, while proceeds will benefit future acquisitions and make way for new chapters in MACBAs collecting vision.

What a pleasure dealing with a professional and efficient auction house, from the bidding process, communication and advice, living in the UK, they couldn't have done any more and nothing was to much trouble
