Freeman’s is pleased to present Prints & Multiples, our marquee auction with a tightly curated selection of Old Masters, Modern and Contemporary prints offering depth, quality, and range for collectors at every level. Highlights include works by Picasso, Warhol, Hockney, Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, M.C. Escher, and Dürer, as well as a rare and significant group of copper plates and lithographic stones, led by Rembrandt, Miró, Matisse, Chagall, Dalí, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Fantin-Latour. Scholarly in approach and ambitious in scope, the auction underscores the enduring innovation of artists working on paper, presenting a compelling opportunity for discerning collectors to acquire works of lasting significance.
American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts
This sale features a wide assortment of items including William & Mary, Queen Anne, Chippendale, Federal, Classical, Shaker, Aesthetic Movement, and cast iron garden furniture. Early silver, including historic and presentation pieces, is mixed with Chinese Export porcelain. Presidential representations, including several depictions of George Washington, range across mediums, such as portraits, sculpture, textiles, and works on paper, a highlight being a portrait miniature by Robert Field. Other portraits of prominent Americans are done by artists including José Francisco Xavier de Salazar y Mendoza, Robert Street, Micah Williams, Charles Bird King, and Thomas Sully. Portrait miniatures, silhouettes, brass, tinware, glass, baskets, coverlets, quilts, and nautical objects and tools, and hooked rugs fall into both formal and folky categories. Fine needlework samplers, with a rare Adam & Eve example, contrast with self-taught works including an Andrew Clemens bottle and a carved limestone figure by William Edmondson. Impressionist and Modern Art
Freeman’s April 29 auction of Impressionist and Modern Art is led by the landmark rediscovery of Europa by Josef Šíma, a 1927 near-twin canvas to the version held at the Moravian Gallery in Brno. Offered from the distinguished Ingersoll Family Collection of Philadelphia, the painting is supported by fully documented provenance, firmly anchoring it within Šíma’s Parisian milieu of the late 1920s. One of the artist’s most enigmatic and powerful works, Europa signals an ambitious pictorial language poised between Surrealism and poetic abstraction, that is bound to attract global interest. The sale is further distinguished by works from prominent Russian artists, including Pavel Tchelitchew, Grigory Gluckmann, and Nikolai Fechin, the latter represented by a newly resurfaced portrait from the W.S. Stimmel collection, one of his foremost American patrons. Very pleased with Cincinnati location.
The Cincinnati location is top drawer. The young lady I dealt with was extremely sharp, answered a couple of questions I had and was able to take my payment and arrange shipping all during the same phone call. She even spotted a discrepancy in my mailing address, that she corrected then and there. I will definitely be bidding with them in the future.
