Camp Rosemary: Posy Krehbiel Estate, Part II

Camp Rosemary, as it is affectionately known by the family who have been its stewards since 1988, comprises nearly nine acres of awe-inspiring gardens and a classically proportioned red brick Georgian house designed in 1904 by Benjamin Marshall for John Taylor Pirie (1871-1940) and his wife Sophie Skirving Hunter (1872-1966). At the time, Marshall engaged Bostonian landscape architect Rose Standish Nichols to design the estate’s formal gardens. Today, the house and gardens are a culmination of thirty years of collaboration between Posy Krehbiel, her family, a dedicated team of workers, architects, designers, and distinguished gardeners. Posy Krehbiel, a renowned philanthropist, artist, athlete, world traveler, and avid gardener, cultivated an extraordinary life at Camp Rosemary. Beginning with renovations by Chicago architect Thomas Beeby, Kirsten Beeby, and later working with Imogen Taylor of Colefax and Fowler—the leading arbiters of English country house taste—Posy and John Krehbiel preserved and enhanced their historic property, a treasured stalwart of Lake Forest heritage. With a thoughtful eye for preservation and a keen sense of taste, Posy and John breathed new life into the home, expanding its footprint through the addition of a delightfully ornamental swimming pool folly with a Dutch-inspired gable rising over an open terrace. The pool house’s interiors, on the other hand, are inspired by classical Swedish rooms, with trompe l’oeil painted murals. A destructive fire in 1995 ruined part of the garage wing and the apartment above it, providing an opportunity to build a conservatory and with it an adjoining guest house. And on and on, creating a stylish, comfortable, and unpretentious residence, as well as perhaps the finest private garden in North America. Throughout Posy’s home’s collection, the connection to the garden is profound. Botanical upholstery, framed specimens, and leaf-form ceramics are pervasive. Eighteenth century English and Continental furniture complete the country house idyll. Now, the thousands of enthusiasts who followed Posy Krehbiel through her garden gate can acquire one of many objects in which her vibrant, joyful essence is palpable. Part II of the Camp Rosemary auction series features an additional 250 lots from the Estate of Posy Krehbiel in a timed, online-only bidding format. Part II is open for bidding from November 26 through December 12.Photos of Camp Rosemary by Tom Rossiter.

Prints & Multiples

Freeman's is excited to present our winter session of Prints, Multiples, and Photographs on December 12th featuring strong collections of Contemporary and Modern works as well as a curated session of artwork from the esteemed collection of Dr. Gary W London, Washington, D.C. Among the contemporary session, the sale includes particularly bright Pop examples by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Tom Wesselmann, works by Frank Stella and Jim Dine, and examples by Sam Gilliam from the estate of William Weege, Gilliam's longtime friend, collaborator, and printer. The Modern offering highlights both European and American masters. In addition to works by Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, and Wassily Kandinsky, there is a strong group of works by Martin Lewis, Thomas Hart Benton, and Howard Cook. In the second half of the sale, Dr. London's keen eye for color is clear across a broad range of twentieth-century movements, brought together through Dr. London's curation. Bringing together artwork from such artists as Wolf Kahn, Anni Albers, Robert Indiana, Dorothea Tanning, and Shepard Fairey, the sale provides the most discerning collector the opportunity to include these storied examples of Modern and Contemporary art to their collection. Please note that our offices will be closed for the holidays beginning December 20, 2025, and will reopen on January 5, 2026. If you need assistance or would like to schedule a pickup before this time, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Art + Design

Just in time to celebrate the holidays, Freeman’s December 12th Art + Design auction brings a bountiful smorgasbord of 177 lots of paintings, drawings, sculptures, furniture and design objects to the table with delicacies for every taste from the well-seasoned familiar to excitingly bold new flavors. Of leading significance in the sale are a jazzy quintet of sublimely spellbinding Gertrude Abercrombie paintings, four of which importantly belonged to writer Wendell Wilcox and his wife Esther, including a most precious sparkling gem the smallest self-portrait the Queen of the Bohemian’s is known to have made, still housed in the intricately ornate artist-selected miniature frame. Another exceptional highlight in the auction is a signature sonic Harry Bertoia sculpture that likely served as a sample for his monumental masterpiece commission for the Standard Oil Building in Chicago, equally as stunning in the home version scale. Also of note on offer is a vibrant lightning bolt of a hard-edged abstract by Washington Color School stalwart Howard Mehring--a decisive and dazzling display of pattern and hue. For those searching for outstanding stocking stuffers with nice list pricing, almost the full array of the charming and famed Norton Family Christmas Gifts also warrant attention. Continuing the lengthy list of not to be missed works in the auction are exhilarating examples by Sam Gilliam, Conrad Marca Relli, Michael Goldberg, Roger Brown, Karl Wirsum, Joseph Raffael, Dale Chihuly, Hunt Slonem, LeRoy Neiman, Tom Friedman, March Avery, Ilya Bolotowsky, Karel Appel, Fahrenlissa Zeid, Barnaby Furnas, Dashiell Manley, Wolf Kahn, Cynthia Daignault, Alexander Calder, Carlos Cruiz-Diez, Jean Cocteau, Jorge Pardo, Alan Uglow, and many more. We invite you to enjoy the careful examination of this wide-ranging wonderland of a sale to discover the treasured lots to brighten the season and beyond.
