Collection of Roger S. Wieck & Jean Francois
Property from the Collection of Roger S. Wieck and Jean-Fran?ois Vilain: Sold to Benefit The Morgan The Collection of Roger S. Wieck and Jean-Fran?ois Vilain, Sold to Benefit The Morgan Library & Museum, reflects a life devoted to scholarship, beauty, and the art of collecting. This collection is presented as part of American Week at STAIR, with live bidding beginning on Thursday, August 20th. Known for his distinguished career as a curator and department head at The Morgan Library, Roger S. Wieck was widely respected in the worlds of rare books and illuminated manuscripts. With previous curatorial roles at the Houghton Library of Harvard University and the Walters Art Museum, he devoted his life to the study of Medieval and Renaissance books, manuscripts, art, and culture. Alongside his longtime partner of more than fifty years, Jean-Fran?ois Vilain, the pair assembled a deeply personal collection informed not only by academic rigor, but by genuine passion, curiosity, and enduring relationships with artists, makers, and fellow collectors. Wieck and Vilain spent their time between residences in New York and Philadelphia, each surrounded by the museums, libraries, and cultural institutions that informed and enriched their lifelong dedication to scholarship and the arts. Each home was thoughtfully layered with works of art and objects that embodied their appreciation for craftsmanship and design. The large collection of Arts and Crafts and American Fine Art celebrated their love of metalwork by Roycroft, Rookwood Pottery and interpretations of the male form by artists including Walker Hancock, Mark Beard, and Joe Brown.Americana

STAIR Carries a Great Variety
Perhaps because STAIR is located in the Hudson Valley where Artists, Educators, and Cultural figures lived in the 19th century, STAIR has access to fine antiques and artworks from that era. I personally collect all things Gothic and Medieval so I was very pleased to find a Gothic Revival Chair offered at their Auction. I was even more pleased that I was the successful bidder although shipping a couple of states away, was a concern. I was happy that a Hudson, NY UPS store was able to pack and ship the chair (it was much heavier than I thought) and get it delivered to my home with only a broken dowel, easily repaired. I wish STAIR were closer, but in the meantime, I will continue to look for items that match my collecting categories. They were very attentive to my inquiries and helpful in arranging shipping. In summary, I feel they are a very good Auction house and would buy from STAIR again.
