Mid-Week at STAIR
Each month, Mid-Week at STAIR presents a quintessential mix of traditional and modern Fine Art, Furniture and Decorative Arts from various collections and estates. On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Mid-Week at STAIR will feature Selections from The Collection of Gary Graffman. As an internationally renowned pianist, Gary Graffman travelled the world to perform, providing the opportunity to pursue his interest in Asian works of art in China and Japan. Over decades, Graffman amassed a large collection of objects, scrolls, furniture, textiles and works on paper that spoke to his intellectual interest in Asian iconography, history and craftsmanship. The Collection of Gary Graffman represents the academic interests and pursuits of one of America?s great classical musicians and provides an opportunity for collectors of Asian works of art to appreciate the connoisseurship required to assemble a collection of such depth and breadth. Complementing Selections from the Collection of Gary Graffman are a group of ceramics and decorative arts from The Collection of Simon Parkes, and a collection of frames that were Property from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisition Fund.

STAIR is delighted to present The Collection of L?Antiquaire & The Connoisseur, New York on Thursday, October 8, 2026. For many New Yorkers, a stroll down 73rd street would never be complete without a look inside the windows of L?Antiquaire & The Connoisseur. For decades, the townhouse at 36 East 73rd Street was home to one of the world?s most respected galleries of seventeenth and eighteenth century European Fine and Decorative Arts. Born into a family legacy of collecting and stewardship, Helen Fioratti is the daughter of Countess Ruth Constantino, who is widely considered to be the first female dealer of fine and decorative arts in the United States. Constantino founded The Connoisseur Inc. in 1935, where Fioratti grew up immersed in a world where objects were chosen with intention and a considered perspective. In 1965, Fioratti founded L?Antiquaire, and later in 1982 merged the two galleries together to expand offerings to a new generation of collectors. Across its rich history, L?Antiquaire & The Connoisseur has placed objects in institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Uffizi, and the Brera in Milan. Fioratti has written many books on furniture and decorative arts, including Please Be Seated, Illuminating Their World: Three Hundred Years of Light, and Playing Games: Games and Their Players from Antiquity to the Present. Through these publications, Fioratti has reinvigorated antiquity and inspired friends and clients alike to become collectors of les petite richesses. Drawn to antiquity from early childhood, she spent a lifetime guided not only by tradition, but by her instinct for beauty all her own. Her breadth of collecting has cemented her as an authority on French and Continental antiques and informs a developed and meticulous personal collection. STAIR Carries a Great Variety
Perhaps because STAIR is located in the Hudson Valley where Artists, Educators, and Cultural figures lived in the 19th century, STAIR has access to fine antiques and artworks from that era. I personally collect all things Gothic and Medieval so I was very pleased to find a Gothic Revival Chair offered at their Auction. I was even more pleased that I was the successful bidder although shipping a couple of states away, was a concern. I was happy that a Hudson, NY UPS store was able to pack and ship the chair (it was much heavier than I thought) and get it delivered to my home with only a broken dowel, easily repaired. I wish STAIR were closer, but in the meantime, I will continue to look for items that match my collecting categories. They were very attentive to my inquiries and helpful in arranging shipping. In summary, I feel they are a very good Auction house and would buy from STAIR again.
