Excellent communication and service
First time bidding at Capsule. Received condition report in less than 24 hours, clear communications regarding shipping options. All remaining questions answered promptly and completely. I was on a tight schedule for shipping, wired payment on friday, art work picked up on monday, shipped on tuesday, received thursday in Arizona. I use Bonhams, Heritage, Hindman/Cowans, and other smaller auctions. Capsule was a pleasure to deal with.

Shipping was an unmitigated disaster
I bought two prints, which, even in their frames, are quite diminutive in size. They were packed in an enormous box with hardly any material to keep the prints from bouncing around. There was no tape on the glass to keep shards from wreaking havoc after it broke. All in all I consider it a small miracle that only one of the frames was destroyed. To add insult to injury, the shipping fee charged was high and totally devoid of any correlation to the service provided.

Excellent local NYC auction house
I had a great experience, both times I purchased from Capsule I was able to walk over of 26th street, make an easy payment and hang my painting the same day. Friendly people, classy curated sales, and super convenient for NYC locals.

Responsive and Good end of auction process
They provided a list of shippers, all of whom were responsive and provided quotes within a day or two. Once a shipper was selected I didn't have any problems. I believe they also offer in-house shipping which appeared to be good but was more expensive. Very responsive staff that answered my questions about the painting I purchased (including detailed condition questions). Overall, a good experience. Thank you!

Unfavorable experience
I won't be doing business with Capsule Gallery again. They automatically including shipping on my invoice, selecting an anonymous shipper in advance. To ship a single small unframed and unmatted print cost over $70. Thirty-four years of experience in the art business assures me this is excessive and well beyond what other reputable auction houses/shippers would charge. The entire process was also notably slower than usual, even during the pandemic. They try to make it an entirely digital experience, but I prefer the personal touch provided by so many reputable auction houses. If you do choose to do business with Capsule, just be forewarned of potentially excessive shipping costs.
