DesignThis June, Christie's Design is honored to present a curated ensemble of important and rare designs by pre-eminent artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The auction showcases an exploration of mid-century master Jean Royère, highlighted by his 1950s 'Sculpture' Suite, Property from an Important Southern California Collection, and several iconic designs from the Collection of Norah and Norman Stone. The sale also features an exceptional group from A Century of Art: The Gerald Fineberg Collection, led by the Important 'Menhir della Vita' by Ettore Sottsass from 1966, along with many spectacular ceramics by Lucie Rie and Hans Coper. Iconic designs by Alberto and Diego Giacometti will be highlighted, including a plaster 'Oiseau' (Albatros), Property from the Estate of Jerry Ganz, and a rare 'Calabash' table lamp in a polished alabaster. The artists' archetype use of bronze is also seen in Alberto's 'Grande Feuille' floor lamp, Property from the Collection of Ms. Odyssia Skouras , Diego's 'X-Form Stools, Troisième Version', and his impressive 'Grecque' Low Table. Masterworks by Claude Lalanne will be presented in the sale, including a masterful 'Structure Végétale' Chandelier, an extraordinary 'Ginkgo' Dining Suite and the celebrated 'Crocodile' series of seating, as well as a rare 'Hosta' Mirror, among others. .
The Getty Collection: Temple of WingsChristie's is proud to announce the second installment of the Ann & Gordon Getty Collection. Following the October 2022 marquee week of landmark sales, this June Christie's will present the contents of the Gettys' turn of the century Berkeley property: Temple of Wings. This live auction will be one of three in a series of sales devoted to this exceptional interior. Proceeds will benefit the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation for the Arts, dedicated to supporting arts and science organizations. Temple of Wings was built in a Greco-Roman style as the home and dance studio of Florence Treadwell Boynton in the hills of Berkely, California. Under Ann Getty's stewardship, this historic house held a microcosm of late 19th century taste filled with masterpieces the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts movements, and illuminated by a remarkable group of Tiffany Studios lamps. The collection is cohesive in its celebration of 19th and early 20th century decorative arts and includes works designed by A.W.N. Pugin, the figurehead of design reform and the revival of the Gothic in Great Britain; masterpieces by titans of Victorian decorative arts like celebrated architect-designers William Burges, Bruce Talbert and Charles Robert Ashbee; an impressive group of William de Morgan ceramics; and both furniture and textiles by the recognized ‘father' of the Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris. Mirroring the decorative arts are the important Victorian paintings by renowned artists recognized by the Royal Academy such as Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Lord Leighton. The Getty Collection: Aesthetic DecorationHave nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. – William Morris From 31 May to 15 June, Christie's is pleased to present The Ann and Gordon Getty Collection: Aesthetic Decoration from Temple of Wings including a selection of furniture, decorative arts, textiles, fine art and books surveying the rich eclecticism of the 19th century. This online sale salutes Ann and Gordon Getty's veneration of ‘The House Beautiful,' echoing principles of the Aesthetic movement in the practice of surrounding oneself with objects that inspire joy, and the celebration of ‘Art for Art's Sake'. The collection includes works designed by the most notable architect-designers of the Victorian era including Bruce Talbert, William Burges and Phillip Webb, alongside notable American firms like the Herter brothers. The sale features ceramics by William de Morgan and a wide selection of American Art pottery by Rookwood, Grueby and Newcomb, as well as silver by Charles Robert Ashbee and the Guild of Handicrafts. Rounding out this varied selection are textiles by William Morris, John Dearle and Liberty & Co., as well as selection of paintings and books. The Getty Collection: Early Modern DesignColor is to the eye what music is to the ear. – Louis Comfort Tiffany From 31 May to 15 June, Christie's is pleased to present The Ann and Gordon Getty Collection: Early Modern Design from Temple of Wings featuring a selection of works of art by Tiffany, and other important 20th century glass, furniture, decorative arts and textiles. This online sale builds upon the elevation of the decorative arts in the 19th century, and the reformation of design with its focus on craftsmanship that led to more avant-garde exploration of materials and techniques in the 20th century. The sale is led by the impressive and colorful collection of Tiffany Studios glass and lighting, and complemented by contemporary glass designers like Émile Gallé, Muller Frères, Daum, Loetz and Lalique. Other masterpieces of 20th century design include furniture and rugs by Arts and Crafts designers such as Charles Annesley Voysey, the Dun Emer guild and Charles Rohlfs, as well as sumptuous textiles by Fortuny and Silver Studios.
