Rare Colonial Notes & Choice Australian Coins

Sydney, Nsw, Australia
Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 381. This Sale features several Australian Colonial Banknotes that aren’t quite what they seem, including the only surviving Austilin Bank £1 spurious issue passed by Thomas Saulsbury Wright, better known as 'Tommy the Banker' or the 'Rogue Banker'. Transported to Australia for forgery offences in his sixties, Wright was still passing bogus notes decades later and was convicted again on the cusp of his 100th birthday. He died on Norfolk Island in 1843 at the age of 104. Also featured is a ‘signed’ Bank of Van Diemen's Land £20 dated July 1st, 1832, skilfully altered from a £1. The note survived because it was retained as evidence in a trial. The Sale also includes a wide selection of Australian Pre-decimal coins in choice grades at affordable prices, with grading informed by four decades of experience and two decades dealing with PCGS and NGC. Happy bidding.
