Antique Arms and Armor

An exceptional cased pair of percussion duelling pistols, by John Manton & Son, Dover Street, London, leads Bonhams Antique Arms and Armour Sale in London on Wednesday 26 May. The pair are estimated at £20,000-30,000. Bonhams Head of Arms and Armour, David Williams, said: "Formerly the property of the Duke of Norfolk, Arundel Castle, these pistols were acquired directly from the family in 1967 by the world's greatest collector of antique firearms, William Keith Neal. They are in truly remarkable original condition. Considered to be the finest examples of their type to survive, they would form the centrepiece of any collection of antique firearms." Other highlights of the sale include: • An equestrian full armour for man and horse in German late 16th century style. Built as an accurate reproduction inspired by two sets of armours on display in the world-famous Wallace Collection in London, this armour is an impressive, decorative example of a type that has not come onto the market since the 19th century. Estimate: £15,000 – 20,000. • A very rare mamluk 14/15th century broadsword. Swords of similar form can be found in the Istanbul Military Museum. The origins of these kind of swords exhibiting as they do Byzantine and Islamic features remains a mystery. Estimate: £15,000-20,000. • An exceptional flintlock seven-barrel pepperbox revolver, by John Twigg, London, circa 1781-87. This example of an early revolving English pistol is not only rare, but is also remarkably in original condition, making the finest example of its type to survive. Carried as a personal protection against thieves, it would have been an expensive gentleman's accessory at the time it was made. The revolver was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1972. Estimate: £15,000-18,000. The sale also features a wide selection of 18th century English flintlock pistols.
