Old Master Paintings

Poppy Harvey-Jones, Specialist & Head of Mid Season Sale for Old Master Paintings, says: "Shipping in a Calm Sea, a charming seascape, was commissioned by Horace Walpole, the son of Robert, Britain’s first Prime Minister, from his neighbour, Samuel Scott. It was to be hung, with several others, in the mirrored niches of The Gallery at Strawberry Hill, originally a small cottage Walpole developed into one of the most significant mansions of the 18th century. Walpole, an important patron and staunch supporter of Scott, owned at least 8 of his paintings and regularly promoted the artist’s works to his high society friends, and said of Scott “if he was second to Vandeveldt in sea pieces, he excelled him in variety." This painting, unseen on the market for 178 years, comes to sale from a private British collection, having been acquired by the present owner’s family at the ‘Great Sale’ of the Contents of Strawberry Hill in 1842. An impressive work much influenced by Dutch 17th century marine painting, and exceptional, unbroken provenance, makes Shipping in a calm sea my highlight of the forthcoming Old Masters sale."
