In this catalog you will discover a world of history. Selected for their rarity and timeless quality, the bidder will find curiosities including items from the lifelong collection of the late Donald James Douglass. The items in this collection will be sold to benefit the Douglass Foundation, established in 1982 exclusively for educational, entrepreneurial, scientific, and artistic purposes. The foundation has provided funds to schools of business, the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas for graduate level scholarships, and Douglass Fellowships in American art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The foundation has also supported Texas Biomedical Research Institute Post Doctorate Fellowship in gene function.
Mr. Douglass expressed his love for American art, impressionist art, and sculptures that inspire beauty, love, and spirituality. Among the many names in this collection are Harriet Whitney Frishmuth, Alexander Stirling Calder, Paul Howard Manship, Doris Porter Caesar, and Aristide Maillol.
In addition there are a number of other smaller collections. Works by Dorothy Hood, Stanley Boxer, Friedel Dzubas, and Robert Natkin are among the items from two private collections of art in Houston, Texas.
• Private Collection, Goodyear, Arizona • Collection of Judy Youens, owner of Youens Gallery, specializing in Art Glass, Houston, Texas • Estate of Donald James Douglass, San Antonio, Texas; proceeds to benefit the Douglass Foundation. • Estate of Laurence Cartledge, Los Angeles, California, and Houston, Texas.
