The Astronaut Gordon Cooper collection
On May 15-16, 1963, Gordon Cooper piloted the "Faith 7" spacecraft on a 22-orbit mission that concluded the operational phase of Project Mercury. Cooper then served as command pilot of the 8-day 120-revolution Gemini 5 mission on August 21, 1965. It was on this flight that he and pilot Charles Conrad established a new space endurance record by traveling a distance of 3,312,993 miles in an elapsed time of 190 hours and 56 minutes. Cooper also became the first man to make a second orbital flight and thus won for the United States the lead in man-hours in space by accumulating a total of 225 hours and 15 minutes.

The astronaut richard Gordon collection
Richard Gordon was one of the third group of astronauts named by NASA in October 1963. He served as backup pilot for the Gemini VIII flight. On September 12, 1966, he served as pilot for the 3-day Gemini XI mission. Gordon was subsequently assigned as backup command module pilot for Apollo 9. He occupied the command module pilot seat on Apollo 12, November 14-24, 1969. Other crewmen on man's second lunar landing mission were Charles Conrad, spacecraft commander, and Alan L. Bean, lunar module pilot.

The Virgil Grissom Family Collection
Virgil "Gus" Grissom was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts and flew on MR-4 aboard Liberty Bell 7, the second United States suborbital Mercury flight. He later flew as commander of GT-4 with John Young. Grissom was in training for the first manned Apollo flight, Apollo I, when he was killed, along with fellow crew members Ed White and Roger Chaffee, when a spark in the Apollo Command Module triggered a fire in the 100% oxygen atmosphere. Part of his legacy to the space program is that this fire led to a complete redesign of the Apollo Command Module using non-flammable materials and a mixed oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere.
