Garry Knox Bennett Collection and Design

LAMA is honored to present The Collection of Sylvia & Garry Knox Bennett at auction on March 27th. From being the self-proclaimed "roach clip mogul of the world" to an internationally renowned woodworker and artist, Bennett emerged as a titan of the post-war American studio furniture movement. Based in California for a career spanning six decades, Bennett infused his exquisitely constructed works?which ranged from chairs and cabinets to clocks, jewelry, and, or course, roach clips?with humor and ample references to the history of art and design. Together with his wife Sylvia, Garry Knox Bennett built a collection of works by artists, designers, and makers who were Bennett?s contemporaries?many of whom the pair called friends?and a great number of these pieces were made specifically for them. Reflecting both Bennett's deep affinity for extraordinary craftsmanship and his irreverent, iconoclastic sensibility, the sale?s highlights include design from Judy Kensley McKie, including her magnificent 1989 Panther coffee table, as well as works by Sam Maloof, Jon Brooks, and Wendell Castle, and art from David Gilhooly, Roy De Forest, Wayne Thiebaud, and Mel Ramos, among others. This session is followed by Design, which offers an exquisite selection of extraordinary design from makers and visionaries of the past century. Highlights include David Wiseman's Branch Mirror with Cherry Blossoms and a set of eight Grass-seated chairs by George Nakashima, as well as works from Jean Prouve, Pierre Jeanneret, Paul Evans, Dan Johnson, Gae Aulenti, and Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. Further, the auction includes a significant group of works by artist and designer Roy McMakin from the Collection of Anne and Bob Nugent; Anne Nugent was McMakin's original business partner in founding Domestic Furniture Company.
