Silver & Plated Ware

A highlight of the sale is the rare and intricate salver by the famed Indian silversmith Oomersi Mawji, royal silversmith to the Maharoas of Kutch (Lot 323). Alongside this we have some Indian Colonial pieces by Hamilton & Co of Calcutta, one of the most distinguished firms to set up in colonised India (Lot 322). Following this trend for foreign silver, we are delighted to be offering a beautiful example of Chinese Export Silver in the form of a dressing table set by Tuck Chang & Co of Shanghai, displaying perfectly the fusion of commercial European taste with Chinese flair (Lot 380). This sale also showcases various notable makers, including the Portuguese silversmith Antonio Firmo da Costa whose works bridge the important transition period for Portuguese silver between the 18th and 19th centuries (Lot 318); John Samuel Hunt (Lot 28); John Cafe the candlestick maker (Lot 22); and William Bateman I (Lot 24). Also, we have a fine example of Old Sheffield Plate, a twin branch candelabra by Matthew Boulton. Birmingham born Boulton was jointly responsible for Boulton & Watt steam engines and a distinguished member of The Lunar Society, instrumental in the early Industrial Revolution, before campaigning for the establishment of the Birmingham Assay Office (Lot 270).
