Stokes Haitian Art Auction #9
Icon Fine Arts
Glenn and Yvonne Stokes were frequent visitors to Haiti when he operated a Pest Control Business fumigating ships and hotels in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. They would travel to Haiti once or twice a month also fumigating homes of hotel owners and the Presidential Palace for Papa Doc. During this time, he met many friendly Haitian people including artists which were at their peak in the 40's and 50's.
They had time to make friendships with many Haitian people and have kept these friendships. He met many Haitian artists and businesspeople and continued to have contact with them throughout the years. He developed a close friendship with Toussaint St. Pierre and that is how he started his monumental art collection that continued to climb in numbers to the point of more than three thousand Haitian pieces. He collected until recently (2025).
Stokes is also an avid photographer with 1000?s of Haiti slides and has given many presentation slide shows for several years. Until the recent unrest broke out in Haiti. At that point in time Stokes continued to collect art at low prices, because of the unrest. Exchange and selling of Haitian paintings dropped precipitously making them difficult to sell at a profit. Therefore, this led Stokes to focus on selling instead of collecting. He has been forced to sell paintings for below what he paid for them. This auction is an example of this. In the last year, the environment has caused him to drop prices below purchase price by 10% or more. All paintings have been priced at 25% below past prices and well below purchase price.
