Post-War Canadian Folk Art

Don?t miss the excitement beginning on June 11th at 5pm. Our sale of folk art features important works by notable Canadian folk artists from 1950 to present. Works have been curated to include artists from Quebec, Ontario and Maritime Regions. We are excited to offer a selection of fresh-to-the-market works by Maud Lewis including an early Springtime Oxen and two Christmas Cards. The quirky and fabulous Joe Sleep is represented by a 7-foot work ? Symbiosis of Creatures, Land and Sea. Significant land, sea, and waterscapes by Canadian master Joe Norris are featured, including ?Summer Cove?, similar to ?Summer Cove, Flowers in Bloom', illustrated on page 39 of Bernard Riordon?s Joe Norris: Painted Visions of Nova Scotia. Also included are two exceptional works by Cyril Hirtle, including ?Doughboy? a unique work which is pictured with the artist. In addition, we have a number of prime Maritime carvings. These include interesting and multi-group carvings by the ever-so-hard-to-find Charlie Tanner, including an early family group. From Ontario, the line-up is particularly well represented, with two special works by Angus Trudeau including the ?Norgoma? which was purchased directly from Angus Trudeau and is being offered by the Estate of the Late Alex Cameron. Quebec folk art is well-represented in this sale with several book piece Wilfrid Richards, a strong lineup of Yvon Cot? carvings, Leo Fournier and the highly esteemed Philippe Roy. Many other works featured in this sale come from single- owner estates and long-standing collections; not a sale to be missed.
