Silver & Plated Ware

Welcome to our winter sale of silver and plated ware, which includes over 700 lots featuring Georgian, Victorian and modern silverware. Our first highlight in this sale is a silver basting spoon by renowned silversmith Paul de Lamerie (Lot 443). Paul de Lamerie is cited as ?the greatest silversmith working in England in the 18th century? by the V&A museum, who house several notable pieces by the maker. Son of a Huguenot, de Lamerie emigrated to England in the early years of his life and studied under the London goldsmith Pierre Platel. Although a more modest piece from de Lamerie?s extensive body of work, Lot 443 is definitely one for the astute collector. We have several other Georgian silver items by collectable names such as a pair of silver candlesticks by John Cafe (Lot 96) and two pairs of waiters by Ebenezer Coker and Elizabeth Cooke (Lots 4 & 25). The auction also encompasses several key pieces of Chinese export silver: Lot 351 is a wonderfully eclectic set of fish servers; we have an ornately designed Chinese salver as Lot 381, together with many quirky smaller lots. Also in this section we have a beautiful Indian dish by Hamilton & Co., thought to have been used as a caviar dish in the Bengal Native Infantry mess and would add a touch of finery to any supper table (Lot 358). Finally, with the festive season soon upon us we are pleased to be offering over 200 novelties which would be perfect stocking fillers: A charming Sampson Mordan ivory combination snuff (Lot 704) for example; Or perhaps some well-crafted items for a luxurious Christmas lunch, we would suggest Lot 571, a set of Garrard & Co silver corn cob holders, or even a handsome pair of silver table birds (Lot 284).
