Silver & Plated Ware

Welcome to our summer sale of Silver & Plated Ware which features over 600 lots, ranging from the Georgian, Victorian and modern era. Our highlights begin with a selection of Channel Island silver, including an eighteenth century silver Christening cup, circa 1780 by Jean-Pieree du Port of Guernsey (Lot 22) and a late eighteenth century or early nineteenth century silver beaker by Jacques Quesnel I of Jersey (Lot 23); both are superb examples of the work produced by the islands highly regarded silversmiths. For those with an eye for Masonic regalia, we have several lots of notable significance (Lots 234, 235 & 236). Lot 235 in particular, is an early twentieth century colonial ceremonial set presented to Sir Charles Calvert Bowring K.C.M.G, K.B.E. (1872-1945); Bowring was a British colonial administrator, Governor of Nyasaland and notable Freemason. The ceremonial set itself comprises a beautiful trowel, ivory handled set square, plummet and horn hammer in a fitted wooden case. Exquisitely adorning the front cover, Lot 296 is a Victorian electroplated charger, of 'A Pompeian Lady at her Toilet', by Elkington & Co., and designed by Leonard Morel-Ladeuil. Considered one of his masterpieces, the plaque depicts in relief a reclining lady being tended to by three servants, bordered by decorative damascening with gilt highlights. Finally, from our Novelties section, we have some beautiful etui cases (464 & 529). French for holder or keeper, these decorative boxes were usually an entity of their own or as an appendage to a chatelaine. Traditionally, they would contain tools for both a gentlemen and ladies daily use; such as folding scissors, sewing needles, and tweezers and ear spoons. Similarly, we have wonderful Victorian silver 'castletop' vinaigrette by Gervase Wheeler, Birmingham 1839 (Lot 593) which depicts a view of Kenilworth Castle.
