Silver & Plated Ware

As autumn approaches, our September sale of silver promises to deliver a varied range of lots to suit all budgets and interests. Our first highlight is a piece by the highly regarded ?Father of Birmingham?, or more commonly referred to, Matthew Boulton (1728 -1809). Lot 320 is a George IV Neoclassical silver-gilt cup and cover of urn form, beautifully embellished with fruiting vines, acanthus leaves and grapes; hallmarked MatthewBoulton Plate Co, Birmingham 1827. In order to expand the family business, Boulton entered into partnership with John Fothergill in 1762;together they opened the famous Soho manufactory. As one of the earliest factories in Birmingham, they were exporting hundreds of items all over the world, lot 3 being a prime example.This late eighteenth century silver mug, of plain baluster outline to a skirted base, a stylised heart shape terminal to the simple scroll handle, hallmarked Matthew Boulton& John Fothergill, Birmingham 1780. Both lots demonstrate the exceptional design and craftsmanship Boulton was producing. Avid spoon collectors will be interested to find we have a collection of Queen Mary I through to Charles II Apostle Spoons in our Cutlery and Flatware section (Lot 481 - 490). It is quite rare to come across a pre-Elizabethan spoons, as such Lot 486, a Queen Mary I silver Apostle spoon, hallmarked 1556, with fig shaped bowl and Master Apostle terminal with pierced nimbus is of notable significance. More so as its maker, Nicholas Bartholomewwas one of the most important spoons makers of the period; identified by the maker?s mark of a crescent enclosing a mullet on the back of the spoons stem. For those with an eye for enamelled silver, we have (Lot 139) a beautiful Liberty silver and plique-à-jour enamel bowl, inset with enamel panels of green and red, hallmarked Liberty & Co Ltd, London 1898. We also have a pair of Liberty Cymric small silver and enamel dishes, hallmarked Liberty & Co Ltd, Birmingham 1903 (Lot 140).
