In order to expand the family business, Boulton entered into partnership with John Fothergill in 1762;together they opened the famous Soho manufactory. As one of the earliest factories in Birmingham, they were exporting hundreds of items all over the world, lot 3 being a prime example. This late eighteenth century silver mug, of plain baluster outline to a skirted base, a stylised heart shape terminal to the simple scroll handle, hallmarked Matthew Boulton& John Fothergill, Birmingham 1780. Both lots demonstrate the exceptional design and craftsmanship Boulton was producing.
