Silver & Plated Ware

To kick start we have an impressive selection of tableware, condiments and goblets, in particular we have some beautifully crafted candlesticks (Lots 63, 67 & 82) as well as decanters and claret jugs (Lot 83, 121, 134, 177 and 237) which would make the perfect accompaniment for a cold winter?s evening. Another highlight in this sale is Lot 70 - a Victorian novelty hot water pot modelled as a watering can by Thornhill & Co (Walter Thornhill). Based at 144 New Bond Street in Kensington, Walter Thornhill was renowned for broadening the company?s area of expertise as cutlers and silversmiths by moving into the manufacture of dressing cases, writing boxes and other luxury pieces. Quickly building up a reputation within the industry for the quality of his work, Thornhill went on to win several prizes, most notably at the Great Exhibition of 1851. For those with an interest in Irish silver, we have several notable lots of significance in our Holloware and Flatware sections (Lot 5, 41, 42, 95 and 470). Lot 95 in particular is a mid-Victorian Irish silver-gilt vessel with banded Celtic knot decoration and cabochon gem set corners by renowned silversmith Samuel Le Bas. With the festive season soon upon us we are pleased to be offering an abundance of silver novelties which would make perfect stocking fillers including scent bottles, menu holders, smoking accessories and hip flasks - lot 621 being a perfect example. Modelled as a horse?s head, Lot 621 is a modern Stirrup cup typical of the vessel traditionally offered to a man mounted on horseback about to embark on a hunt. By the nature of their shape a Stirrup cup could not be put down until the vessel was empty. Finally, perhaps you are looking for some well-crafted items for a luxurious Christmas lunch.
