Silver & Plated Ware

We have a number of striking pieces in this sale, including Lot 193 - An Edwardian silver Warwick vase by Edward Barnard & Sons, hallmarked London 1903. The Warwick Vase originates from fragments discovered by Gavin Hamilton (1723-1798) in 1769-70, which he found whilst excavating in the silts of Lake Pantanello in the grounds of the Villa Tiburtina outside of Rome. The villa was owned by the renowed Roman Emperor Hadrian (AD117-38). For the antique collector, we have Lot 91 A George II silver kettle on spirit stand by Lewis Pantin I, hallmarked London 1733. Lewis Pantin was a second-generation Huguenot and successor to Simon Pantin; examples of Lewis' work demonstrate an innovation in French style and technique on traditional English forms. This cohesion in design and form suggests a great deal of interaction with other Huguenots of the time who were considered to be part of 'Lamerie Group'; aptly named after Paul de Lamerie (1688-1751); who is renowned as the greatest silversmith working in England during the 18th century. Other highlights include Lot 101 ? A George III silver wax jack, hallmarked London 1765. The wax-jack was developed in order to solve the problem of melting sealing wax. These devices acquired the second part of their name from the term used for any apparatus which consisted primarily of a roller or spindle, known as 'jack'. It soon became a regular part of many desk sets, and was made in a range of styles as demonstrated in the pierced hexagonal base of Lot 101. From our Novelties section we have a turn of the century Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders dirk by R & H.B. Kirkwood of 66 & 88 Thistle St Edinburgh (Lot 686). Finely crafted, in a leather scabbard with thistle mounts, and studded wooden hilt with citrine terminal, the dirk provides an interesting insight into the traditional weapons worn as part of civilian wear and military dress.
