Silver & Plated Ware

Welcome to our winter sale of Silver & Plated Ware, which includes over 700 lots featuring Georgian, Victorian and modern silverware. The traditional singing bird box originates from Switzerland; it contains a miniature automaton singing bird concealed below an oval lid, once activated it performs a distinctive whistle and musical melody, before falling back into the box. In the past, feathers of South American hummingbirds were used for their iridescent colours which created a jewel-like appearance. Lot 681 which adorns our December front cover is a beautiful German silver example in the manner of Karl Griesbaum, decorated with playing and musician cherubs, and a charming blue bird. Equally beautiful in form and featuring in the sale is Lot 686 ? a nineteenth century cased gilt posy holder. The posy holder is a lady?s accessory often made of silver which resembles a small vase; it would have held the flowers brought by courting gentleman callers. The openwork body of lot 686 is embellished with scrolls of enamel and set with turquoise and garnet cabochons. For those with a military interest, may we draw your attention to Lot 348 ? this mid-Victorian Irish silver double ended snuff box is engraved to each cover with the 4th Royal Lancashire Militia crest, superbly mounted on a wooden plinth with presentation inscription which reads: ?Presented to the mess of the 4th Royal Lancashire Light Infantry by Aquilla H. Kent and T. Byron Whitehead, Berwick-On-Tweed. 1855?. Hallmarked Dublin 1855, maker?s mark JT. The same crest and military interest can also be seen in Lot 176. Other highlights include Lot 717 ? a selection of three similar Indian pandan or betel boxes, each depicting various birds and animals amongst floral engraving. The use of these boxes in India were for holding ?paan? combined usually with areca nut (betel nut) ?chunam? (lime paste) and wrapped up with betel leaves.
