Silver & Plated Ware

Welcome to our autumn auction of Silver & Plated Ware, which features over 600 lots of Georgian, Victorian and modern silverware. Our highlights begin with some striking pieces by Omar Ramsden, including Lot 142 a 1930's silver dish, the circular form lightly planished and lobed interspaced with tapered beading and central Tudor Rose on red enamel background, alongside Lot 631 - an Arts & Crafts silver caddy spoon by Omar Ramsden & Alwyn Carr, the planished fig shaped bowl rising to the scroll handle with central enamelled plaque. Ramsden and Carr set up a studio in Chelsea in 1898 and were known to have produced all manner of silverware, drawing influences from the Arts & Craft Movement. Other well-known makers include a private collection of silver by Hester Bateman which can be found throughout the sale: Lot 39 is a George III silver cream jug, the pedestal form with bulbous body and beaded rims, hallmarked Hester Bateman London 1787 and Lot 406 a George III small silver game or poultry skewer, the tapered form with crested and initialled shield terminal. Having beenbequeathed the tools of her husband John's trade following his death in 1760, Hester was successful in the decade following to transition the business from that of John Bateman, Jeweller, Chain maker and occasional silver worker, to that of Hester Bateman, Silversmith. Standalone pieces include Lot 341 an early twentieth century Russian silver mug by Faberge, although modest in size its applied border of swans and stylised classical motifs demonstrate skilled craftsmanship. As we head towards Christmas, our selection of photograph frames would make an ideal present, including Lot 248 - An Art Nouveau silver mounted photograph frame, the square form with whiplash outline and border, or Lot 249 a matched pair of Edwardian silver mounted photograph frames, the circular apertures bordered by a beaded rim and openwork trailing foliage.
