12 1/4 x 12 1/4 in
Provenance and Authentication:
According to the Letter of Authenticity (LOA) and Certificate of Authenticity (COA) provided by the consignor, this collectible was subjected to a forensic examination. The accompanying documentation states that the signatures were evaluated with reference to multiple characteristics, including ink deposition, material and aging characteristics, stylistic consistency, and historical context. Based on the examination described in these documents, the authentication provider concluded that the findings were consistent with the attributed signatures. The LOA and COA provided by the consignor accompany the lot.
A U2 Boy LP, bearing signatures attributed to all four members of the band: Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. The accompanying record retains its U2 Boy label, corresponding with the album sleeve.
Released in 1980, Boy was U2's debut studio album and represents one of the most important early milestones in the band's career. As the record that introduced the group to a broader international audience, it occupies a particularly significant position within U2's discography.
The autograph placement is especially appealing. The sleeve incorporates individual portraits of the four band members along its left side, and the signatures are positioned in close visual association with the respective members. This creates a natural relationship between each musician and his autograph while preserving the principal cover imagery.
The four visible autographs display distinct writing characteristics. Bono's signature features broad, flowing movement and an enlarged initial gesture; Adam Clayton's inscription appears comparatively loose and abbreviated; The Edge's signature is more compact, with stronger lateral emphasis; and Larry Mullen Jr.'s autograph shows a more vertically oriented and rapidly connected construction. These differences in proportion, rhythm, abbreviation, and terminal movement provide useful points for comparison with documented U2 autograph material.
The sleeve exhibits visible age and handling, including edge wear and general surface wear consistent with a vintage record cover.
Complete signatures of all four U2 members are particularly desirable when preserved on an album directly associated with the band's history. Their appearance together on Boy combines a complete band autograph set with U2's debut studio album, giving the piece strong appeal to collectors of U2, post-punk, rock, and twentieth-century music memorabilia.
