Perforations on the base are vestiges of the casting process. Overall preservation is excellent.This is a rectangular ding with flared mouth and folded rim. A pair of upright rectangular pierced handles rises from the rim. The vessel belly bulges slightly outwards. All four outer walls are fully decorated in relief with taotie (beast?mask) motifs. The mask features prominent eyes; horns, brows, nose and cheeks are rendered with coiled thunder?pattern scrollwork. Motif outlines are crisp with full, rounded relief lines. Four column?shaped legs join the lower belly. Upper sections of legs are adorned with simplified beast?mask and triangular geometric patterns arranged in orderly fashion. The interior is hollow. Casting?related holes remain on the base as evidence of mould?casting technology.
